Back Surgery
Each vertebrae in the spine is cushioned by rubbery pieces of cartilage called discs. When a disc slips out of place or gets damaged, it can put pressure on spinal nerves and cause pain, weakness and numbness. An orthopedist can perform surgery to remove or replace a damaged disc to relieve symptoms and prevent further damage.
Most back surgeries are performed while you are under general anesthesia. During the procedure, an intravenous line is inserted into your arm for a sedative and painkiller. Your doctor will monitor your heart rate, blood pressure and breathing during the operation. After the sedative wears off, your doctor will make a 3-6 inch incision in your back and separate or retract the spinal muscles to access the herniated section of the disc or the vertebrae. If you’re having a spine fusion, your doctor will remove a piece of bone (lamina) from the side of your vertebrae to enlarge the space where the spinal nerve leaves the spinal canal and relieve pressure on the nerves.강동역정형외과
A lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) involves fusing the spine across the disc space from the front. This is done with a minimally invasive technique that limits muscle manipulation and preserves abdominal strength and function. With or without insurance, a back surgery can be expensive. Your health insurance plan may cover a portion of the cost depending on whether your surgery is medically necessary. Out-of-pocket expenses may include a deductible, copays and coinsurance.송파정형외과
