A male hair transplant is a surgical procedure that moves healthy hair follicles from the back and sides of your scalp where your hair continues to grow to the areas on the top of your head where your hair is thin or balding. Your surgeon will start by applying local anaesthesia to numb the treatment area. They may also apply a sedative to help you relax. They will use a tool to separate the strip into smaller sections, known as grafts, before they transfer them to the balding or thinning areas of your scalp. These grafts may be micro-grafts, which contain one or two hair follicles; mini-grafts, which contain a few hairs; or larger grafts that contain up to 40 hairs.
They will then reattach the grafts to your scalp with glue or a surgical needle and cover them with gauze or bandages. You should expect a few days of rest before you can leave the clinic.
Most surgeons use the hair on the back and sides of your scalp as the source for transplanted follicles, but some people have thicker hair in their beards or body that can also be used. If your surgeon is using your beard or body hair, they will need to shave this area before the surgery.

The transplanted follicles will need to be protected after the surgery by keeping them dry and clean for the first few weeks, especially if you are swimming or showering regularly.
